Kobushi was a proposed CG-animated feature film adaptation of the 2012 television series of the same name owned by Zagtoon. The film was to be a co-production between Zagtoon Pictures (later ZAG Animation Studios, Inspidea, Lagardere Entertainment, and SAMG Animation).

It was never officially announced, but production was allegedly halted in 2017, before it was eventually confirmed in 2021 by film director Stephane Juffé on a now-deleted Instagram post that production has been "aborted".[1]

History

While the Kobushi TV series was airing in France, ZAG began working on developing and producing the feature film. As confirmed on Stephane Juffé's LinkedIn, he was involved in the film's development from January 2011 to September 2013[2]. In 2012, the film was officially announced on the official Zagtoon website.[3] It was later confirmed in 2014 that the film was in production and the length is going to be 90 minutes long[4].

On May 5th, 2015, composer Tanis Chalopin posted the film's score piece on SoundCloud.[5] She later posted the first official teaser for the film on her website, but there wasn't any dialogue from the characters.[6]

Footage from the trailer was later shown in a 2016 ZAG Heroez promotional video[7].

On November 16th, 2017, Juffé uploaded the official theatrical trailer for the film on Vimeo (as of 2024, this trailer has been set to private)[8].

Since then, there hasn't been any news about the film's production process. The Kobushi television series ended in 2015, and ZAG has moved on to its more popular brands like Miraculous Ladybug and Ghostforce. On June 16, 2021, Juffé confirmed on a now-deleted Instagram post that the feature film had been "aborted", meaning production had been cancelled years prior. He also confirmed that SAMG Animation did the animation for the trailer and Jeremy Zag, CEO of ZAG Entertainment, was the producer.[6]

Starting in 2024, the original trailer was made private on Juffé's Vimeo and removed from Chalopin's website. Though, Chalopin's original score is still available on SoundCloud. Luckily, screenshots from the trailer have been taken and were posted on the Kobushi wiki. There were reuploads of both teasers on YouTube, but they were later removed due to copyright claims by ZAG Studios.

As of 2024, it's unknown if ZAG will revisit this project someday after it signed a ten-picture deal with Cross Creek Pictures in 2022.[9]
