The Young Girls of Rochefort (French: Les Demoiselles de Rochefort), is a 1967 French musical comedy film directed by Jacques Demy, starring sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac, with George Chakiris, Grover Dale, Jacques Perrin, Danielle Darrieux, and Gene Kelly. [1] The film is Demy's second musical film, following the success of 1964's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. While not quite as successful as that film, it was still a hit in its native country, and also garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. [2]
The version of the film that was originally theatrically released in the United States was an English-language dub, that was shot simultaneously with the original French-language version. While all the musical numbers were shot in both English and French, the rest of the film was not. [3] While the film was a hit when released in France, the English-language version released in America was not commercially successful.[4] To date, the English dub of the film has not been released on home video.
Only two musical numbers from this version, both sourced from a pan and scan low-quality television recordings, as well as an extremely rare LP of the English-language soundtrack, have resurfaced.
