Wattam is a puzzle game developed by Funomena and published by Annapurna Interactive. Being announced at PlayStation Experience 2014, the game encountered multiple delays until its eventual release on December 17, 2019. The game was originally announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, which was changed to a PlayStation 4 and Steam release.
Development
Beginning in 2013, Wattam's development has been stated to have been an incredibly stressful project. Many disagreements between Robin Hunicke (co-founder of Funomena) and Keita Takahashi (director and creator of Katamari Damacy) created an uncomfortable workspace for the development team.[1] This lead to the game's style completely changing and the removal of many unique features.
Gameplay
Both the prototype and final version of Wattam share the theme of uniting the people. However, there were certain characters who would have been harder to befriend than others. Pillow was intended to be a "boss character"[2] with original cutscenes detailing Pillow's sad backstory. Wattam's final release excludes multiple characters which were featured in the demo. These include: The letter "B," the letter "M," a soccer goal, a heart, a soccer goal, Coffee Bean, Turn Table, Strawberry Choco, Pon de Ring, and Cloud.[3] Depending on the character you were playing as, different "powers" could be activated by pressing the triangle button on the PlayStation DualShock. Examples include: Cloud making it rain, Turn Table starting a dance party, and Toro using its salmon to fly.[4]
Availability
Wattam's demo was playable at E3 2015[5], being described as "experimental" and "unique."[6]
