Barbapapa is both the title character and the name of the "species" of said character, of a series of children's books written in the 1970s by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor, who resided in Paris, France. The books were originally written in French and were later translated into over 30 languages.
Barbapapa is a pink blob-like creature who can shapeshift. His name comes from the French "Barbe à papa" - literally "Daddy's beard" - the French term for cotton candy or candy floss. He has a wife and kids, who are also shapeshifting blob-like creatures of various colors.
The character was later adapted into an animated series, which was dubbed in English and had a short syndicated run in the United States in 1981.
There is also an alternate English dub that aired in Canada. In June 2017, an hour of Barbapapa cartoons from the Canadian English dub was found. These were from the second VHS/Betamax volume released in the UK. The first volume remains unavailable currently. The Pre-Cert Video website refers to it as the "Americanised version" despite it not being the dub that aired in the US.
DVDs with re-encoded VHS recordings of the US English dub were at one point sold on iOffer.[1] One of these was bought and its rips were donated by MrLeap in July 2017.
Yet another English dub aired in the UK. It was narrated by Michael Flanders.[2][3] This dub remains completely lost.
