Adventures on Rainbow Pond (also known as The Brave Frog and Demetan Croaker) is an English adaptation of the TV anime Demetan The Frog (けろっこデメタン Kerokko Demetan), produced by Harmony Gold USA at some point in the mid-to-late '80s (exact year unknown).[1] It covered approximately 26 episodes of the original 39-episode series.[2]
Harmony Gold also released the Demetan anime as two compilation films, titled The Brave Frog and The Brave Frog's Greatest Adventure, in 1988 and 1989, respectively.
Availability
While the two feature-length compilation dubs have been widely circulated, no footage of the Adventures on Rainbow Pond English incarnation has surfaced. This version was used as the basis for a few international dubs, such as ones aired in Germany, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia.
It has been alleged that there were a few localization differences between this version and the compilation films, with the love interest character (Ranatan) being named "Pookie" in the two films but "Hilary" in the series. Should this allegation be true, this would mean that the lines and voices heard in the feature-length English adaptations may be completely different from those of Adventures on Rainbow Pond. The German dub localized the same character's name to "Hildegard" in their version of the TV series, which was based on Harmony Gold's version.
A copyright catalogue of Harmony Gold's titles suggests that the rights to this version were held until at least 1996,[3] along with The Magical World of Gigi and a dub of Temple the Balloonist that was retitled "Sabrina's Journey".
The full Arabic dub is titled الضفدع الشجاع (The Brave Frog). The intro sequence of the dub was found and uploaded by YouTube user Abdeljalil Atlassi on January 4th, 2008.[4] Some years later, on May 7th, 2015, user ksz2010 found and uploaded the full first episode of the dub to YouTube.[5] Finally, starting in May of 2021, user Happy Family uploaded all 39 episodes of the Arabic dub to YouTube.[6]
Starting on February 12th, 2013, YouTube user Labandadeiranocchi uploaded the entirety of the Italian dub of the show, which is titled La banda dei ranocchi.[7]
On September 14th, 2014, the full English version of The Brave Frog was found and uploaded to YouTube by user Григорий Нестеров. The "second half" of this feature-length adaptation, The Brave Frog's Greatest Adventure, was uploaded to YouTube by user Neil Nadelman in December of 2018.
Starting on July 14th, 2016, YouTube user "El rincón del Anime" uploaded the entirety of the show; the video feed is taken from the French version (known as Démétan, la petite grenouille), but the audio is ripped from VHS tapes of the Spanish version (known as La ranita Demetán).[8]
Starting on September 4th, 2023, YouTube user Funny Sheep uploaded the entirety of the French dub of the show, this time with its full, unedited video and audio.[9]
On July 18th, 2024, La rana valiente, a Spanish dub of The Brave Frog (produced independently from the Spanish dub mentioned above and published by East West DVD Entertainment around 2005) was uploaded in full to the Internet Archive and partially to YouTube by user Scarlet Vortex.[10]
