Status: Partially Found

The Garfield Shorts is an animated show with an episode duration of around 40 seconds each. It was aired on Boomerang and Cartoon Network as additional content and as promotion for The Garfield Show. Some are visual comedy, others real life advice and some are songs taken from the show in a kind of music video.

It was produced by Dargaud Media and distributed by Mediatoon Distribution. According to Mediatoon’s website[1], the show consists of 54 shorts and 80 songs. It is believed that all the shorts and songs are available on Mediatoon’s website; however, an access code is required to enter the screening room, making only one short ("Family Picture") available on the site, being used as a trailer for the show.

Shorts

The shorts were aired between commercials on Boomerang and Cartoon Network. The French version was aired on Channel 3 in France (it has not been confirmed if other channels aired them). They are also available in some of the show’s DVD releases as Special Features. In some of the DVD listings on Amazon, a user named “Teary Eyes” Anderson commented on a list of some of Garfield’s TV series and specials DVDs[2], including all volumes of The Garfield Show up to volume 13. The list includes almost all the content that comes in each volume, including shorts. Almost all of the DVDs said to contain shorts have been confirmed to have them as special features, either from walkthrough of the DVD on YouTube or because the DVD box says it has Garfield Shorts as bonus content. The only one that hasn’t been confirmed to have shorts in it is the “Its Showtime” DVD, as it does not seem to have any records or walkthrough online.

It is unknown if all the DVDs have been found yet, but the ones confirmed to include shorts on them are:

  • Oh Odie! (2010)[3]
  • All you need is love (and Pasta) (2011)[4]
  • Spooky Tails (2011)[5]
  • Dinosaur & Other Animal Adventures (2012)[6]
  • Spring Fun Collection (2013)[7]
  • Pizza Dreams (2013)[8]
  • A purrfect Life! (2013)[9]
  • It’s showtime (2014)
  • Best friends Forever (2014)[10]

According to Mediatoon’s website[1], production of the shorts began in 2010. However, the copyright on the first shorts was released in 2008. They may have been released alongside the seasons of The Garfield Show. This would make sense because of the different themes they have by year: the 2008 shorts, being a visual comedy, that would have been produced with season 1 (released in 2009) and the 2010 shorts, being real-life advice from Garfield, which would have been produced with season 2 (released in 2010 and 2011). No shorts have been found after 2010, although the songs that have been found are from 2011. This could mean that the 14 shorts remaining to confirm are from season 3 or 4.

From the 54-episode list, only 23 have been found or found in part (in bad quality). 9 shorts' names remain unknown.

*This short is from 2008. It may be part of one DVD released before 2013, but no name on the list matches the Christmas theme, so it was set apart until new information shows up.

Songs

It is not known where the songs were first aired, but it is probable that they were shown between commercials as the shorts were. There is not much information about them, other than there are 80 songs in total and that they are songs from the show, using different clips of the show as well. From the 80 only 9 have been found. Most of these songs’ copyright year is from 2011, meaning they could be part of season 2 or released between season 2 and 3 of the show. All the songs have been found on unofficial YouTube channels.

In one of them, the description says that the short is from a French DVD of the show[11], showing that they are also available in French DVDs, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Similarly, in one of the found songs[12], the intro announces the song as part of the website of thegarfieldshow.com. It is confirmed that they were found there as well[13].
