Magic Mountain (known in China as 神奇山谷 shénqí shāngǔ, directly translating as "Magic Valley") was an Australian/Chinese children's television series produced between 1997-1998 by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, China Central Television and Southern Star Entertainment. It was a full-body puppet series aimed at ages 2-5 and aired between 1997-2004 on ABC TV's "ABC For Kids" programming block and in mainland China on Central China Television (CCTV) Until 2013. It also aired on Nick Jr. in the UK, on TVO in Canada, and on TVNZ 2 in New Zealand. it had a website until it was removed during September 2010, when the new ABC Kids website was introduced. The series has also been dubbed into Spanish, Portuguese,^[1] Arabic, Polish ^[2] and Hebrew, as well as many other languages.

History

The show comprised 52 ten-minute episodes with each of the two seasons featuring 26 episodes in total, and most of the crew and cast were Chinese. It featured four characters (all four characters are animals featured in Chinese culture) Lion, Panda, Tortoise, and Dragon.^[3] Production was done between 1997-1998. The first series had five VHS releases each containing four episodes in Australia, while the whole series received a VCD release in China.

In 2008, the first video of the show appeared on YouTube being the intro.
In 2013, the episodes "Lion Moves House," "Sports Day" and "Princess Panda" were uploaded by Classic ABC TV.
In 2014, "Secret Apple Tree," "Panda's Midnight Feast," "Dragon Sneezes," "The Hollow Tree" and "The Explorers" was uploaded to YouTube by IfoundthesesVHStapesburiedinmybackyard.
In 2015, "Tortoise's Restaurant" was uploaded to YouTube by IfoundthesesVHStapesburiedinmybackyard. In that same year, the episodes '"Dropping In," "Hide and Seek," "Dragon's Treasure," "Panda the Ballerina," "Territories," "Magnifico," "Three Wishes," "Panda Club," "Dragon's Birthday," "Tortoise the Hero," "A House for Tortoise," "The Swap," "The Robber," "Missing Friends," "A Sticky Situation," "Lion's Nighttime Funfair," "Lion's New Friend," "Upside Down Tortoise," "Emergency Rescue," "Double Panda," "Panda Loses Her Memory," "Lion's Circus," and "Very Fast Tortoise" were uploaded to YouTube by Cowandchick 32.
In 2017, the Chinese dub of "Princess Panda," "Lion's Circus,"'Lion Moves House," and "Dr. Lion" was uploaded to YouTube by Justin Jung.
In March 2019, "It's Raining It's Pouring" was uploaded to YouTube by IfoundthesesVHStapesburiedinmybackyard and the whole first season was uploaded by ABC Time Machine.
In 2021, the entire Chinese dub was uploaded by Joseph Marshall on YouTube but was lost again after the channel was terminated later that year. However, all 52 Episodes of the Chinese dub were discovered on Internet Archive that was uploaded on March 5th, 2021, making the Chinese dub available again.
On September 6th, 2022 YouTube channel Johnson and Noddy uploaded two season 2 episodes "Magnifico" and "Tortoise the Hero".
On February 15th and March 13th, 2023, the final two episodes of the series "Cousin Dragon' and "Return to Magic Mountain" were uploaded in Polish containing the English title cards.
On September 17th, 2023 "Weather Magic" was uploaded by Johnson and Noddy although missing some of the beginning after obtaining it from Matt B.

Availability

Only the first season received a VHS release in Australia for unknown reasons. However, in China, the whole series received a VCD release. As of 2024, it hasn't had a DVD release anywhere, though it is very likely that home recordings exist or in an unlikely situation the tape masters are found or released. As of 2024, only 10 episodes are missing their English dubs while 1 episode "Weather Magic" is missing its beginning. Two of these, that being "Dragon's Cousin" and "Return to Magic Mountain" were found in Polish containing the English title cards.
