1, rue Sésame is a French educational children's television program that was an adaptation of Sesame Street for French audiences. It aired from January 4, 1978 until June 24, 1982, on channel TF1, running for 4 seasons.

For many decades ever since its programming, the series has almost been entirely lost.

Premise

The series focused on two new "Muppet" characters played by puppets or actors in costumes: Toccata, a naive and well-meaning tall white albatross and Mordicus, an energetic and mischievous blue Grouch. They were later joined by Trepido, a smart pink snail. They were designed by Michel Berthier and Lucien Morisse was wearing the Toccata costume.

They had their own human supporting cast featuring adults such as Clémence, Roger, Odile, and Maxime alongside children such as Fabienne and Rodrigue. A lot of the interstitial segments were dubbed from the original American version, but some new ones were made locally. Thus, classic characters such as Kermit, Harry Monster, The Count, Grover, Cookie Monster, Ernie and Bert would still appear.

Loss and findings

Despite having a level of popularity and being a beloved nostalgic classic for French viewers of Generation X, there has been very little publically-viewable footage left of the show. For a long time, the only clip one could find of 1, rue Sésame was the opening theme.

The show was running on TF1 alongside the other children's TV program L'Île aux Enfants featuring puppet-suit mascot Casimir, but was overshadowed by its success. In fact, 1, rue Sésame first originated as a segment on L'Île aux Enfants, which was footage from Sesame Street dubbed in French.

Many merchandise subsisted, such as picture books, a magazine that ran for 15 issues with original comics and song vinyls.

From 2018 until 2023, more clips of the show surfaced online, alongside one full episode.
