Hate Hurts You was a 30-second anti-hate PSA by the Jewish Chautauqua Society. It first aired around 1974.[1]

The ad was infamous for it's terrifying nature with the depiction of an angry man getting closer to the screen as his head swells and turns red, along with a haunting voice-over and music, which reportedly terrified children. So 8 years later, in 1982, The Jewish Chautauqua Society aired a shorter, less-scarier version of the PSA.

Description

In the ad, an angry cartoon man walks from a distance towards the screen. As he gets closer, his head grows bigger and redder with each step. Along with eerie music came a sinister voice saying "Hate... is an acid that corrodes... a poison that erodes... Your body, mind and soul... So when you hate... Who do you hurt the most? Hate hurts you..." The cartoon man's head then explodes once he gets extremely close, which is accompanied by the voice-over yelling, "HATE HURTS YOU!"

The 1982 version of the ad is pretty much the same as the above, except for that it had different music and a different voice-over that simply said "When you hate, Who do you hurt the most?..." and like the original, once the man's head explodes, the voice-over says, "Hate hurts YOU!" but in a less-frightening tone.

Availability

Due to its scary nature, the PSA was shortly pulled off the air, although it's been claimed it might have re-aired up until the early 1980s according to the comments of the ad's YouTube upload. As of July 2022, the shortened version is readily available online, while the original 30-second version has yet to surface.
