Urban Smash was a cancelled action racing game that was being developed by Evolution Studios for the PlayStation 3. The game was never announced before being cancelled and seemed to have mostly been in the pre-production stage, with very little information about this project being known. A lot of the concepts that were planned to be used for Urban Smash were later repurposed for Evolution Studios' Motorstorm Apocalypse released in 2011.

Development

Urban Smash started development around 2007, with the conception of a new IP trying to rejuvenate the racing genre and to find a footing in an oversaturated market.[1] The game would've featured destructible environments, including buildings that can be smashed through, causing the walls of the building to break apart. Locations like Washington, D.C. and London being considered for the game, with Evolution's team being sent out to these locations to gather research and information about them to be used for the game.[1] The game would've featured a wide variety of vehicles that would've been used in the game, including dirt bikes, police cars, superminis, commercial trucks, fire trucks, and double decker buses.

Cancellation

Production of Urban Smash was then halted for the reason that Evolution Studios could focus on developing Motorstorm Pacific Rift.[1] After production on Pacific Rift wrapped up, it was decided that Evolution Studios and Sony Computer Entertainment would rather work on a third Motorstorm game instead of an original IP, this led to the ceasing of Urban Smash's development, with a lot of the concepts that were going to be used for Urban Smash being reworked for Motorstorm 3, which was released to the public as Motorstorm Apocalypse.

Availability

A build for Urban Smash was showcased at the 2010 Eurogamer Expo in a developer session for Motorstorm Apocalypse, showing off the environmental destruction that was designed for the game, along with several pieces of concept art.[2] In 2018, an ex-animator for Evolution Studios uploaded an animatic for a trailer for Urban Smash that was made back in 2007 onto their YouTube account. It is unknown if the build of Urban Smash that was shown off at Eurogamer Expo 2010 still exists, with the possibility that it has been disposed of after Evolution Studios' closure in 2016.
