Blade Runner 2049 (partially found original Johann Johannsson score for neo-noir sci-fi film sequel; 2017)
Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 neo-noir sci-fi film legacy sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner. The film's score was composed by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch but this wasn't always meant to be the case. Originally, Johann Johannsson was supposed to score the film but he left mid-production with most of his score still remaining unreleased.[1]
Background
Johann Johannsson was first announced to be Blade Runner 2049's sole composer in August of 2016.[2] Johannsson has previously collaborated with the film's director, Denis Villeneuve, on films such as Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival so it only felt natural for him to be brought aboard for this project.[3] Then in July 2017, it was reported that Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch would take over as the film's primary composers, with Johannsson now serving a supporting role.[4] Later that same year in August, it was reported that all of Johannsson's contributions to the score had been removed, and when reached out for comment by online music publication, Pitchfork, a representative for Johannsson said, “Unfortunately due to a legal Non-Disclosure Agreement Johann signed we’re not able to speak about this film at all.”[1] When asked about it a month later by Al Arabiya English, Denis Villeneuve would say “The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory. It’s an artistic process. You cannot plan things. Johann Johannsson is one of my favorite composers alive today. He’s a very strong artist, but the movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to Vangelis. Johan and I decided that I will need to go in another direction.”[3]
Availability
With the exception of a song intended to be one of the film's trailer themes and Johannsson's main theme for the film, all of his contributions to the film remain unreleased and it's unclear if they ever will be officially.
