DS vs 3DS

I wonder if they were just trying to show how the 3DS game would also be playable on a Nintendo DS. A bit odd to create a separate box art for that purpose when every 3DS owner in 2016 would already know that their console would also run DS games, but also a bit odd that a studio would even think about releasing a standalone DS rom in 2016.
