Dragon Quest IV (localized as Dragon Warrior IV) is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix for the Family Computer in 1990 in Japan and 1992 worldwide. It was given a remake for the PlayStation exclusively in Japan on November 22nd, 2001. It eventually received a second remake for the Nintendo DS in 2007 and 2008 in Japan and then worldwide respectively.

English localization

In 2002 Enix America had planned to produce an English localization of the PSX remake for the American market. Enix America president Paul Handelman had the following to say about the game:

“The overwhelming success of Dragon Warrior III not only reaffirms the popularity of the franchise but also underscores our belief that a fantastic game-play experience is independent of the platform on which it is played. Each game in the Dragon Warrior series is a brilliant stand-alone product that feeds into a greater, more fully involved universe that is tantalizing players of all ages”[1]

However, the English version was eventually cancelled due to Heartbeat, the company that Enix used to localize their titles, leaving the game industry before the translation was started. Enix America had decided to cancel the game after this due to a lack of budget and time to hire a new team.[2] It was rumored that an English prototype existed, however, this was debunked by Dwaine, a member of a Dragon Quest themed fan forum who had spoken with various Enix America employees and stated outright that no builds were ever made.[3] Despite this Enix America had a marketing team and a PR representative for the game.[4]
