Ijiwaru Ba-san (いじわるばあさん, Granny Mischief) was a 4-koma manga series serialized in Sunday Mainichi, a weekly magazine published by the Mainichi Shimbun from 1966 to 1971, written by Machiko Hasegawa, known for her Sazae-san. This manga is one of Hasegawa's best-known works, along with Sazae-san.

The manga series has been adapted into an anime series twice, the first adaptation was co-produced by Yomiuri TV and Knack (currently, ICHI), known for Chargeman Ken! and Astroganger, and this adaptation was also Knack's first anime TV series. It consisted of 39 episodes and aired on the NTV from October 3, 1970 to August 18, 1971. The second adaptation was produced by Eiken, which also produced Sazae-san, and consisted of 46 episodes and aired on the Fuji TV from April 19, 1996 to June 13, 1997. This second adaptation was aired on Fridays at 7:00 p.m., but since it was treated as a back-up program to Doraemon, which was aired at the same time on the TV Asahi, the ratings did not grow, and most local affiliate stations discontinued the broadcast after nine episodes. Only Fuji TV and Aomori Television have aired all episodes.

Availability

Neither the Knack nor Eiken versions have been home-mediated or streamed, and no way to view these series currently exists.

In 2009, some scenes from the first episode were featured on a DVD accompanying the Yomiuri TV 50 Year Company History, which was distributed only to related parties to commemorate Yomiuri TV's 50th year in business. In November 2010, when the day the Hasegawa Machiko Art Museum was opened was introduced on the "What day is today?" segment of NTV's information variety show DON!, some scenes from the Knack version were also featured[1]. As for the Eiken version, the opening sequence has been uploaded on Niconico, and video of four some scenes was uploaded by Twitter user Shigu (@09112018a) in 2020[2][3][4][5].
