Jellyfish Eyes 2 (partially found cancelled sequel to "Jellyfish Eyes"; 2012)
Jellyfish Eyes 2 is a formerly cancelled sequel of Takashi Murakami's film Jellyfish Eyes. A teaser for this movie was featured on Jellyfish Eyes's DVD and Blu-Ray releases.[2]
Development
Jellyfish Eyes 2 began development on August 1, 2012 before its predecessor, Jellyfish Eyes, was released in 2013.[3] The story would continue from the last movie as the "miracle" which kept the F.R.I.E.N.Ds stable is beginning to deform. A website for this sequel featuring a development diary with updates is still up.[4] However, the diary has not been updated since September 20, 2012.[5]
The movie would have taken on a more mature approach as opposed to the childlike nature of the first film.[7] Whereas Jellyfish Eyes took more inspiration from aspects of Japanese culture like "otaku" and "kawaii" than "kaiju,"[8] Jellyfish Eyes 2 would have been more heavy on the action and emotional aspects of the story.
Cancellation
Unfortunately, in order for Kaikai Kiki Co. to avoid further bankruptcy, Takashi Murakami was forced to cease production on Jellyfish Eyes 2. COVID-19 heavily affected the state of many movies near completion, including this one.[9] Murakami posted a series of videos titled How I Was Forced to Abandon the Production of Jellyfish Eyes Part 2 on Instagram June 30, 2020 to October 1, 2020. Many clips from production, both finished scenes and recordings, were included in this documentary. However, if the project was to be resumed, it is unclear whether if the recorded footage will be utilized. However, production was resumed in 2022, according to Takashi Murakami.[10]
