Madonna Louise Ciccone (also known as Madonna) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in Bay City, Michigan in 1958, she initially studied at the University of Michigan before moving to New York City in 1978 to pursue a career in dancing. In 1979, she quit her career in dance to pursue a career in music and after being in a string of bands, she went solo in 1982. She released her self-titled debut album in July 1983, with the singles “Holiday”, “Lucky Star”, and “Borderline” pushing her into the mainstream. She solidified her position as a pop music icon with her 1984 single “Like a Virgin” and the album of the same name. She broke down barriers for women artists and was one of the first artists to show support to the LGBT community during the AIDS Epidemic in the 1980s. She also is one of the most popular and recognizable names in the music industry.

She is the highest-selling female artist of all time and has sold 400 million records worldwide as of 2023. She has 9 number one albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart, 63 top 10 singles in the United Kingdom, and 67 top 40 singles in Australia. Her “Sticky and Sweet Tour” was the highest-grossing tour for a female artist, a record she held for 15 years.

Madonna has recorded many songs over her four-decade career, many of which being unreleased.

Background and Available Information

In 1979, she dropped out of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance to perform as a background dancer to French disco artist Patrick Hernandez in France and Tunisia. After returning to New York, she wanted to pursue a career in music at the behest of her then-boyfriend. They would later form the band The Breakfast Club. She would record 12 songs with the Breakfast Club, with these being recorded in a synagogue basement with the help of Gilroy [1]. As of January 2024, none of these songs have leaked.

After leaving the Breakfast Club in 1980, she would form a band with music producer and then-boyfriend Stephen Bray called Emmy and the Emmys and would record multiple demos. A lot of these demos were released on the 1997 demo tape Pre-Madonna as well as the 1994 bootleg live album Emmy and the Emmys: First Time Out Off Manhattan. Some of these demos included an earlier version of “Stay” from her 1984 album Like a Virgin and her 1983 single “Burning Up”. She would later hire Bray for her 1983 debut album Madonna.

Some other unpublished songs around this time would be some of her earliest collaborations, including Otto von Wernherr, Jellybean Benitez, Spinal Root Gang, Was (Not Was), Duran Duran, an unreleased version of “I’d Rather Be Your Lover” with Tupac Shakur, and songs recorded under indie label Mia Mind Music.

With the rise and mainstream popularity of the internet and music file-sharing websites in the 2000s and early 2010s, multiple of her unpublished songs would leak, mainly from her Music, American Life, and Hard Candy albums. Some of these songs include “Cool Song”, “The Game”, and “Set the Right” from American Life, “Liquid Love”, “Le Petite Jeune Fille”, and "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room" from Music, and “Infinity”, “Lela Pala Tute”, and “Across the Sky” from Hard Candy.

Arguably some of her most infamous unpublished songs would come from her 2015, 13th studio album Rebel Heart. Between December 16th and December 27th 2014, over 37 unpublished songs and demos, including all 19 tracks from the deluxe edition, would leak on the internet [2], leading 6 songs being released on iTunes early and the lead single Living for Love being released on December 20 instead of the planned February 14th 2015 release date [3]. The album would eventually be released on March 6th, 2015, more than 3 months before the planned release date. One of these demos called “Back that Up (Do It)” was met with acclaim from general audiences and fans, garnering a cult following. A reworked version called “Back That Up to the Beat” was released on the International Deluxe Edition of her 2019 album Madame X, featuring a more Egyptian/North African influenced and drum-heavy production. After the 2014 demo went viral on the social media platform TikTok in late 2022, it was officially released for streaming and digital download on December 30, 2023.
