Oggy and the Cockroaches (found unaired pilot of French animated series; 1997)
Oggy and the Cockroaches was a French animated television series created by the late Jean-Yves Raimbaud and produced by Xilam Animation (previously Gaumont Multimédia) from 1998 to 2018, revolving around a blue cat constantly attacking three sadistic cockroaches.
Shortly after the success of Space Goofs, producer Marc du Pontavice asked series co-creator Jean-Yves Raimbaud to create an new animated series in order to "counter the surge of superheroes, mangas and Franco-Belgian comic book heroes."[1] As a result, a short pilot was created in 1997 to see if it would make it to a full-fledged series, which then was greenlit for production a year later.
Availability
Before 2016, the pilot was near impossible to find in full, due to the pilot never airing on TV. A few clips from the pilot were featured in a Fox Kids promo from 1998 when they were promoting the series in the United States, as well as a Canal Famille (later Vrak) promo from Quebec. Certain aspects of the pilot was later recycled in certain episodes of the first season, the gag involving Oggy hanging on the ceiling upside down was recycled in "French Fries" (although in that episode's case, he lands on a potato cutter rather than mousetraps like in the pilot), while the opening refrigerator and staircase scenes from the pilot was recycled in "Emergency Room". On December 13th, 2016, the official Oggy and the Cockroaches YouTube channel uploaded the full pilot in its entirety, rendering it as found.
