Saiyūki (西遊記) was a Japanese TV series based on the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West, which aired from April 28 to September 23, 1994 on Nippon TV. Because Journey to the West is extremely popular in Japan, it has been adapted into several movies and TV series. This work is the fourth adaptation into a live-action TV series. The main character Son Gokū (Monkey King), was played by Toshiaki Karasawa.
The series was originally planned to have 22 episodes but was shortened to 17 episodes because the ratings were skewed toward TV Asahi's music variety show Music Station, which was airing at the same time and often went off the air due to live baseball broadcasts.
Availability
Only the first episode of the series was released as a VHS, but it was out of print. However, it was uploaded to the Internet Archive by NostalgiaTriumph on May 13, 2018, making it available for viewing[1]. The remaining episodes have somehow never been made into home media and have not surfaced online, making them unavailable for viewing.
