Soil was an American heavy metal band formed circa 1994. The band was founded by Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian, who later brought in the other members David "Dave" Hakopyan, Domingo "Dingo" Laranio and Shavo Odadjian. During 1994, Hakopyan and Laranio left the band.[1] By then, Soil had only performed live once, at Café Club Fais Do-Do in Los Angeles.[2] Soil would later disband in 1995, after having been active for only 8 months.[3] Tankian, Malakian and Odadjian would later form the heavy metal band System of a Down together with the drummer Ontronik "Andy" Khachaturian.[4]

Tankian has described Soil's songs as being very complex and jokingly said that "you could put 7 or 8 System [of a Down] songs into one Soil song."[5] Malakian has said that Soil's songs were around 6–7 minutes long and that they were more like riffs rather than finished songs.[6] He described the sound as a mix of System of a Down, Rush, and Frank Zappa.[7]

In 1995, a rehearsal tape was recorded by Soil and it was unknown to the general public until the early 2020s. On September 22nd, 2020, the YouTube channel named Victims Of A Down released a 25-second long snippet of what is believed to be from the rehearsal tape.[8] In the 2021 documentary, Truth to Power, directed by Garin Hovannisian,[9] another snippet from the rehearsal tape is heard.[3] Currently, it is unclear how many songs are on the rehearsal tape and what they song titles are.
