Status: Lost
"Bro Explaining" refers to a photograph of a man wearing a Houston Astro shirt talking to a blonde woman with a white tank top. The image was uploaded in 2011 by a sports blog and became a popular meme in 2020 in which the man forces his knowledge on various topics onto the woman with many variants being made along with the meme. Despite the meme's popularity, the original broadcast it originated from is missing.
Background
On June 7th, 2011, the St. Louis Cardinals visited the Houston Astros at the Minute Maid Park, where they achieved a 7-4 victory.[1][2] During the game, FOX Sports Midwest showed camera shots of fans, one featuring a male Houston supporter talking to a rather bemused-looking woman next to him.[3] The next day, on June 8th, sports blog JoeSportFan made a post of the image[4] with text on the bottom saying;
"and it was at that point when she realized that his Dad's oil money wasn't worth the bro tales"
The image would then be reposted on Priximus as part of its meme collection before it reached /r/funny on December 21st, 2011.[5]
Availability
Before the meme became mainstream in 2020, the event had attracted little to no discussion within the lost media and baseball communities. But in 2021, Reddit user llamanatee made a post on r/lostmedia discussing the lost broadcast the "Bro Explaining" meme was sourced from. In the comments, /u/Immortal_Knights validated llamanatee's claim, linking a repost of the JoeSportFan blog post and providing game footage. Alas, the available footage came from an entirely different broadcast. Three months later, Reddit user kingofcheezwiz clarified that the FOX Midwest broadcast or the "away" broadcast is the actual version that contained the meme's source footage. They also explained Fox Sports typically airs local market games to their subscribers in that certain region. These games are notably blacked out in other regions during MLB.com broadcasts.[6]
As of 2024, the "Bro Explaining" meme has reached mainstream popularity. Despite this, the FOX Midwest broadcast has yet to resurface online.
