Status: Partially Found

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is a 2006 film from New Line Cinema, directed by Liam Lynch. The film is a fictional story featuring a real-life rock band, founded in 1994 with the band releasing their first studio album in 2001, with one of the tracks being "Rock Your Socks".

Background

Jack Black, the protagonist and writer of The Pick of Destiny, spoke to Entertainment Weekly in November 2005 and when asked about a recent test screening stated: ”it tested really well except for the ending, which was a little turdy, we have to go back and make it more kick-ass."[1].

The film would finally be released in November 2006[2]. In February 2007, the film would be released to DVD, though despite two menus of deleted and alternate scenes, the original ending does not appear on the disc.[3]

Availability

Sometime in 2005, Access Hollywood filmed exclusive behind-the-scenes material on-set of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, one of these is Black and Kyle Gass (the other protagonist) performing "Rock Your Socks" on stage as Tenacious D whilst shooting the movie[4]. Notably, they are wearing the costumes they wore toward the end of the movie, meaning that they are shooting the cut ending.

Some actual footage of the cut ending appears in the film's main trailer, where Black can be heard saying the lyrics included in "Rock Your Socks"[5]. It is likely that an acoustic version of "Rock Your Socks" was intended to be released on the band's second album, however, it was released as an iTunes pre-order bonus track instead[6].

Apart from these two instances, the original ending cut from the film has never been released outside of the 2005 test screening.
