The Joe Rogan Experience (found episodes of YouTube/Spotify podcast; 2009-present)
The Joe Rogan Experience is a popular podcast hosted by Ultimate Fighting Championship color commentator, comedian, actor, and former television presenter Joe Rogan,[1] of which began on YouTube in 2009,[2] before becoming an exclusive to the streaming service Spotify in 2020, as part of a $100 million deal between them and Rogan.[3]
The podcast is very popular across the world, racking up an average listenership of 11 million listeners per episode,[4] all the while the name itself of the show is ubiquitous with popular podcasts. The pop culture site WhatCulture described the podcast as a "legitimate titan of alternative media", due to the variety of viewpoints and guests that regularly appear on his shows.[5]
However, despite this, several episodes of the show, many of which were controversial, either because of the guest or specific involved, or a case of both, of which are inaccessible through Spotify. Many of them were removed from the library of episodes following the Spotify transfer in 2020,[6] but many others started to be removed in early 2022,[7] in response to an effort to remove the entire podcast from Spotify itself due to alleged coronavirus misinformation being propagated in the show, spearheaded by folk singer Neil Young.[8]
While the podcast remains on Spotify, with the company's CEO Daniel Ek stating that he wouldn't remove it, citing that such actions would cause a "slippery slope"[9] - many of the aforementioned episodes are still missing off Spotify, but can be found elsewhere on other platforms, such as Mixcloud, Internet Archive, and YouTube.
Background
In between 2009-2020, The Joe Rogan Experience became one of the most, if not the most, popular podcasts in all of that media. His YouTube account alone had racked up 11.9 million subscribers, all the while his most watched interview, that with former Tesla CEO billionaire Elon Musk, of which caused some controversy, as Musk smoked marijuana live during the show,[10] was viewed 51 million times.[11] Much of his fanbase appreciated the wide diverse variety of guests and topics that he covered, from politics to science to pop culture to comedy, among many other topics in the process, not to mention the copious amount of guests he conducted such interviews with.
However, many of his episodes suddenly disappeared as part of his show's transfer to Spotify in 2020, mainly those of right-wing commentators such as VICE co-founder Gavin McInnes and InfoWars head Alex Jones, alongside others such that of comedian Joey Diaz and Mikhaila Peterson, the daughter of Canadian intellectual and political commentator Jordan Peterson. This was speculated as censorship by many, with the likes of Jones banned from Spotify in a broader sense.[12] Others, such as the aforementioned McInnes, accused Rogan of being a "sell out" when it came to free speech, given that Rogan had prided himself as being an absolutist on that issue.[13][14]
Things came to a head in early 2022 meanwhile, as there were numerous attempts to remove Rogan's show from Spotify. The most significant of these was that spearheaded by folk singer Neil Young, of who accused Rogan of pushing misinformation on coronavirus vaccines.[15] In part because of this, and accusations of racism against Rogan as he had previously used racial slurs in previous podcasts,[16] several of them were deleted from Spotify, with 113 episodes going missing in all, according to the website jremissing.com.[17]
While some supported the measure, a good chunk of people, including many right-wing commentators, denounced the efforts to have his podcast removed as an example of left-wing cancel culture (including former US President Donald Trump),[18][19][20] with Fox News host Tucker Carlson going as far as accusing White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki of being a "fascist", as she also supported the measure.[21] Others, such as left-wing commentator Kyle Kulinski (who has previously featured on Rogan several times), blamed Spotify's links with Saudi Arabia for the censorship of his episodes specifically.[22]
Availability
Despite Ek's aforementioned promise not to remove Rogan's podcast and Rogan himself apologising for the racial slurs, such efforts by Young and others were cited in getting Spotify to label podcasts of which talked about coronavirus at all, all the while 113 episodes remain missing.
However, several of those episodes still survive, either on Joe Rogan's Mixcloud account in audio form or on YouTube itself, whereby Rogan was allowed to keep some of his favourite episodes as YouTube exclusives. It can be also found unofficially on Internet Archive.
