Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer (うる星やつら2 ビューティフル・ドリーマー) is a 1984 anime film directed by Mamoru Oshii, and is the second feature film in the anime TV series Urusei Yatsura based on manga by Rumiko Takahashi. Although the film received mixed reviews when it was first released, it later received critical acclaim and influenced future generations of creators.

Deleted Scenes

There are several scenes in the film that Oshii deleted as being too long. The following are scenes whose existence has been confirmed.

  • The earth with the sun looming over it. The inhabitants board a spaceship and escape, but old Ataru remains alone. The pilot of the spaceship, played by Mujaki, urges him to escape, but he cannot leave the earth because his loved one is in eternal sleep here. Ataru is lost in memories of the past, but he realizes that he cannot remember the name of his loved one, namely Lum, and collapses in despair. Then Cherry on a turtle appears in front of Ataru, saying "Idiot!"[1]
  • Sakura eats a large serving of beef bowl at "Haratama," a beef bowl restaurant run by Sakura in the night[2].
  • Mendou exploring the abandoned Tomobiki Town at night[3].
  • Mendou is raised above ground after discovering Shinobu, who became the stone statue supporting Tomobiki Town[3].

The following is a deleted scene described in the Wikipedia article[4], but with unknown reference source.

  • When Sakura and Onsen Mark return to the school from the coffee shop, they watch in amazement as Kakugari clings to the tank turret and breaks through the window, where Lum fires an electric.
  • After Sakura goes to call Cherry, Onsen Mark walks up to the school, elated to be alone with Sakura tonight.
  • At an okonomiyaki restaurant, Mendou earnestly discusses the strange happenings in the town, but Shinobu is furious at Ataru and his friends for listening to him in a casual manner.
  • Ataru and his friends are relaxing in a pond that has been created on the site of the abandoned Tomobiki High School, and when Lum angrily tries to give Ataru electricity because Ataru keeps messing with Ryunosuke, Ataru spots a little girl with a white hat by the pond. Ataru says to Lum, "There is the girl I have been telling you about," but Lum does not see her. Sakura, who was listening to the exchange on the side, looks at Lum quizzically.
