For the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature of the 74th Academy Awards, character animation of the stars of the nominated animated features was made for Shrek and Donkey of Shrek, Jimmy Neutron and Goddard of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Mike and Sulley of Monsters, Inc.. For the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature of the 79th Academy Awards, the same event occurred with Lightning McQueen and Mater of Cars, Mumble of Happy Feet and Mitchel Musso, Spencer Locke and Sam Lerner of Monster House.
Production
The three pieces of animation produced for each feature's characters were their reaction upon being announced, their reaction upon winning if their movie won the award, and their reaction upon losing if their movie had lost. Since Shrek won, its winning reaction animation and the losing reaction animations of the other features were shown.
This occurred again for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature of the 79th Academy Awards, which featured character animation for Mumble of Happy Feet, Lightning McQueen and Mater of Cars, and Mitchel Musso, Spencer Locke and Sam Lerner of Monster House. Since Happy Feet won, its winning reaction animation and the losing reaction animations of the other features were shown.
Though animated appearances have continued to happen at the Academy Awards, this style of presentation hasn't been attempted again after these two shows. Presumably because, although a novel concept, having the fictional animated characters mostly represent their films at the Academy Awards over the real people that made them could be seen as potentially insulting and diminishing to their work in film that's worthy of receiving Oscars.
Alternate Reaction Listing
Alternate Reaction | Status |
---|---|
Monsters, Inc. (Win) | Lost |
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (Win) | Found |
Shrek (Lose) | Lost |
Cars (Win) | Found |
Happy Feet (Lose) | Lost |
Monster House (Win) | Lost |
Availability
The unused animations for the hypothetical alternative outcomes have largely not been released in any form. Tim Hatcher, the animator of the Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius losing reaction animation, commented that Ray Chase made the Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius winning reaction animation and suggested to him that he upload it, which he did several years later.[1]
On July 9th, 2017, Lightning and Mater's winning animation was found from a YouTube video of James Taylor and Randy Newman's performance of "Our Town" at the 79th Academy Awards, uploaded by "member berries." However, it wouldn't be publicized until YouTuber "OlderTwinStar Frenzy" re-uploaded the animation on August 13th, 2022.
