Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (partially found unreleased Gareth Edwards cut of space opera film; 2016)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (or simply Rouge One) is a 2016 space opera film that is set a week before 1977's Star Wars (retroactively titled Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope). While Rouge One was originally directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Chris Weitz, however, the film went through extensive reshoots which added new scenes to the film all of which were written and directed by Tony Gilroy. As such the original cut of the movie before the reshoots has gone unreleased.
Background
Reshoots for Rouge One were first reported on in May of 2016. While reshoots are common in most modern films these were of note because Disney executives were reportedly in a "panic" after watching Gareth Edwards' first cut of the film, so they brought on writer and director Tony Gilroy to supplement existing scenes with new footage to help reshape the film's tone.[1][2] Reshoots then began in June 2016 with them adding scenes that helped flesh out characters like Cassian Andor and Bodhi Rook,[3] with Orson Krennic actor Ben Medelsohn saying that up to “20 or 30 of the scenes” were changed.[4] After the reshoots, massive changes to the film were also made in the editing room, with some scenes either being cut down or replaced.[5] The ultimate goal of these changes was to shift the film's tone away from that of a war and espionage film to one closer to the first Star Wars movie.[3]
Known Altered or Deleted Scenes
- Scenes of Darth Vader on the Death Star were replaced with ones of him in his castle on Mustafar.[3]
- An alternate ending where some of characters survive the final battle on Scarif.[6] K-2SO and Cassian Andor would not have not survived in this ending, with them dying on the beaches of the planet.[3]
- A much larger scale chase sequence towards the end of the film. Shots from this sequence can be seen the footage reel shown at Star Wars Celebration.[3]
Availability
The original cut of the movie has never been released but some scenes from it can be seen in promotional material. No deleted scenes from the film were included on the home media release of the film because according to Gareth Edwards "There's not an individual scene that you can drag and drop and put on a Blu-ray, there are little things that would come and go during the process of postproduction, but they're not scenes.”[7]
