It was re-posted on Niconico on August 28, 2009, and subsequently achieved a high viewing ranking, which led to several MAD Movies using the artwork being posted in 2019 to 2021, making it an internet meme that went viral.[1]

Origin

The origin of this artwork is currently being debated and is not yet clear. The origin of the artwork was first discussed on August 25, 2020, when Twitter user Mizure posted a tweet questioning why the background depicted in the artwork was Singapore.[2]

Source from Korea

The logo "Newsis" appears in the lower right corner of the artwork, and this artwork has been identified as the one used in a news article reported by Newsis, a South Korean news agency, on December 27, 2006, which stated that "Doraemon will be aired for 36 consecutive hours on Champ TV, a cable TV channel in Korea, on both December 30 and 31."[3] The official Korean website for Doraemon distributes a variety of Doraemon wallpapers, and it was there that the high quality wallpaper of the Singapore art was discovered. It turns out that the one used in the Newsis article was provided by the official website.[4][5][6][7]

However, the wallpaper on this official Korean site was appropriated from a calendar, postcards, and other merchandise originally sold in Japan. As a possibility, it is believed that the Singapore art was also originally used for merchandise sold in Japan.

Calendar Art

TheTsuburo featured a video about the mystery of the original source of this Singapore art. TheTsuburo pointed out that while the calendar artwork is adapted to the background by changing the characters' outfits to fit the situation, the Singapore art looks as if Doraemon and his friends were pasted on top of the background. Furthermore, TheTsuburo said that it is unlikely that the artwork was used for the calendar, as it lacks a sense of seasonality.

However, in the comments of TheTsuburo video, a person came forward to testify that the person saw a calendar with this artwork in the school infirmary when he was in elementary school. The person further testified that the calendar was not a monthly calendar, but a poster-type calendar that featured all 12 months. In addition, the person who testified said that he entered elementary school in 1992 and was in the 5th or 6th grade when he saw the artwork in the school infirmary, and that the year was 1995 or 1996.

TheTsuburo inferred from the testimony that the calendars were sold between 1992 and 1996. The 12-month poster-type calendar currently found is from 1994, but that calendar did not use Singapore art. Therefore, it is believed that it was used in other calendars, but currently no calendars other than 1994 have yet been found.

Postcard

The wallpaper on the official Korean website existed in Doraemon no Hagaki Print 2 (Doraemon's Postcard Print 2), a Windows-only postcard printing software released by Creo in October 2002, and it was theorized that the Singapore art might have been included in Doraemon no Hagaki Print (Doraemon's Postcard Print) released in November 2001, but the person who actually checked said that the Singapore art was not included.

Merchandise in Europe

On April 23, 2023, a user reported on an anonymous message board that he had found a Doraemon merchandise item with Singapore art that he claimed was released in Italy in 2002[8]. The merchandise was an album book that could be enjoyed by attaching stickers to it. The cropped artwork was made into stickers, which were attached to the album book[9].

In addition, there is another merchandise with Singapore art exists, and it was on an extra sticker for the Kinder Maxi, released in Spain around 2004[10]. All of the art used on the stickers have been confirmed on merchandise in Japan, but only the Singapore art has not been confirmed on merchandise in Japan. TheTsuburo posted a video featuring these new discoveries, and he claimed that his speculation was that the artwork may have been used primarily for overseas.
