Electronic Flying Hero (lost live-action Taiwanese adaptation of "Gatchaman" film; 1978)
Electronic Flying Hero (電子小飛俠, Diànzǐ Xiǎo Fēi Xiá) is a 1978 Taiwanese live-action adaptation of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman directed by Yang Tao and written by Chu Hsiang-Kan and Yen Chung.
Background
After the Taiwanese tokusatsu boom of 1976, there is a noticeable decline in sci-fi and toku hero films made in Taiwan. However, there are exceptions, such as 1977's The Invincible Space Streaker and 1978's Electronic Flying Hero. Electronic Flying Hero is significant in the history of Taiwanese toku hero and sci-fi films as it could be considered the last breath of the Taiwanese sci-fi and toku hero boom of the 1970s. Even though it can be regarded as significant to this period of Taiwanese cinema, the film itself is shrouded in mystery, seemingly only survived by an advertisement and two behind the scenes photos.
One of the few bits of info that can be gathered from what is currently available for the film is the title, Electronic Flying Hero. In the advertisement, it is stated that the film is based off of an American comic titled 飛天電子人 (Flying Electronic Man), which was the Taiwanese title for the manga of Gatchaman. Due to the bans on Japanese media in Taiwan at the time, Japanese manga were usually reintroduced as American comics, which is why Gatchaman is named as an American comic in the advertisement. Due to this, it is known that the film is an adaptation of Gatchaman, but all other elements of the plot of the film are unknown.
