The "Kandila at Panalangin Para kay Flor Contemplacion" (transl. "Candles and Prayers for Flor Contemplacion") interstitial was aired in 1995 on ABS-CBN. It is about Flor Ramos Contemplacion (January 7, 1953 – March 17, 1995) who was a Filipino domestic worker executed in Singapore in March 17, 1995, after being convicted for murdering two individuals. Her execution severely strained relations between Singapore and the Philippines.

Background

On 4 May 1991, Delia Mamaril Maga (born on October 6, 1955 in Tarlac), a 34-year-old Filipino domestic worker, was found strangled to death in Singapore. A three-year-old boy, Nicholas Huang, whom Maga had been taking care of, was discovered drowned. Although Huang's father could not identify a suspect, the police learnt about Contemplacion through Maga's diary. The police interrogated Contemplacion, who initially confessed to the crimes of murdering Maga and Huang. Contemplacion never retracted her confession, and the Philippine Embassy in Singapore deemed her confession credible.[1]

Contemplacion was hanged at dawn on 17 March 1995 at the Changi Women's Prison and Drug Rehabilitation Centre despite a personal plea for clemency to the Singaporean government from Philippine President Fidel Ramos.[1]

Prayer interstitial info

According to the viewers, the commercial starts off with a dark background then a candle being lit in the dark. It was accompanied by Wency Cornejo's "Habang May Buhay" and narrated by Peter Musngi, the voice-over of the network. The viewer was able to memorized some part of the narration, which states:

"Mga kababayan, sa mga sandaling ito, tayo po ay mag-alay ng katahimikan, kandila at panalangin para sa ating mahal na kababayan na si..."

"My fellow countrymen, in these moments, let's offer silence, candles and prayers for our dear compatriot..."

A superimposed picture of Flor Contemplacion was then shown.

Availability

The prayer interstitial was aired in 1995 on ABS-CBN after the news of execution of Flor Contemplacion was broke. There is no known copy of this interstitial, but its bumper card was featured during ABS-CBN 2000 Millennium Special.[2] Many viewers were scared of this commercial because of the fact that this was even aired at night and, moreover, Musngi's deep-pitched narration. It was said to be lasted up to several weeks and seen during The World Tonight.[3][4] It was also aired during afternoon animes.
