"Bro Explaining" refers to a photograph of a man wearing a Houston Astro shirt talking to a blonde woman with a white tanktop. The image would be uploaded in 2011 by a sports blog, and became a popular meme in 2020 in which the man force his knowledge on various topics onto the woman with many variants being made along with the meme. Despite the meme's popularity, the original source of the meme hasn't resurfaced online.
Background
On June 7th, 2011, the St.Louis Cardinals played against the Houston Astro at the Minute Maid Park, with the Houston Astros losing to the St.Louis Cardinals by 7-4.[1][2] During the game, FOX Sports Midwest showed camera shots of fans, one being a camera shot of a Houston Astro fan talking to the woman next to him.[3] The next day, on June 8th, sports blog JoeSportFan made a post of the image[4] with text on the bottom saying;
"and it was at that point when she realized that his Dad's oil money wasn't worth the bro tales"
The image would then be reposted on the site, Priximus apart of the meme collection before being reposted on /r/funny on December 21st, 2011.[5]
Availability
Prior to the meme becoming mainstream in 2020, and the missing broadcast, it had attracted little to none discussion within the lost media community and baseball community.
In 2021, reddit user, /u/llamanatee made a post on the lost media subreddit talking about the lost broadcast the "Bro Explaining" meme is from. In the comments, /u/Immortal_Knights shown proof that llamanatee was right, linking a repost of the JoeSportFan blogpost, and a video of the broadcast. Unfortunately, what the user linked was rather a different broadcast instead the FOX Midwest broadcast, where the image is actually from.
Three months later, /u/kingofcheezwiz made a comment under /u/Immortal_Knights comment, stating that the FOX Midwest broadcast or the "away" broadcast is the actual version people need to track. the user also explained Fox Sports airs local market games to their subscribers in that region. These games are blacked out in those regions during mlb.com broadcasts.
As of 2024, besides the "Bro Explaining" meme that had mainstream spread, the FOX Midwest broadcast hasn't resurfaced online.
