Curiosity was the intended second studio album from Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen. It was planned to be released on February 14th, 2012 exclusively in Canada under 604 Records.[1]

The Curiosity album was intended to feature a total of 11 tracks - including Jepsen's hit single "Call Me Maybe" (released in September 2011). Instead, the decision was made to reformat the album into a six-track extended-play. The Curiosity EP was released on February 14th, 2012 in Canada.[2]

Album Track List

  • Curiosity
  • Talk To Me
  • Call Me Maybe
  • Both Sides Now
  • Just a Step Away
  • Lost and Found
  • Picture
  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Dear Julien
  • Europe
  • Angels

When the decision was made to reformat the album into an extended-play, a total of five songs were cut from the track listing. These were "Lost and Found," "Alice In Wonderland," "Dear Julien," "Europe" and "Angels." The majority of the cut songs had been performed live by Jepsen between 2010 and 2012, except for "Europe," which has never been heard.

Announcement and Pre-Order

The first preview of Jepsen's then-upcoming second studio album came on September 20th 2011 with the release of Call Me Maybe, the song that served as the project's lead single. The album was officially announced via Jepsen's social media on January 12th, 2012.[3] On January 24th, the album was made available to pre-order via iTunes Canada.[4]

Alongside the album pre-order, 1:30 long snippets of the then-upcoming songs would be made available to preview on iTunes Canada. This is the only instance where the studio versions of the cut songs are known to have existed for public hearing. Of these songs, "Dear Julien" is the only track to have its snippet resurface. It was re-uploaded to Soundcloud sometime in 2014.

Album Scrapped and Reformatted

On February 8th, 2012, just days prior to its intended release date, 604 Records decided to reformat the Curiosity album into an extended-play. The decision came as, at this same time, Jepsen was in talks to sign a record deal under School Boy and Interscope Records due to the growing worldwide success of her song Call Me Maybe which had only been released in Canada up to this point. Once Jepsen's deal with Interscope was finalised, the Curiosity album was scrapped to ensure Call Me Maybe had "time to grow" before an official album release would come later.[5][6]

Jepsen discussed the Curiosity album in a 2015 interview, stating:

"I was planning to put out my second release, we had this whole album ready to go. Then, the song [Call Me Maybe] took off, and everyone funnelled in with, 'Do you want to come down to LA and meet some writers here?' It was my dream to do that, so I threw all those songs into the abyss and went and started new. I had the security blanket that if I didn’t write anything I loved, I could go back and release bits of that album."[7]

Once in Los Angeles, the Curiosity album was scrapped entirely and work began on what became Jepsen's second official studio album Kiss, released worldwide in September 2012.
