| With the starting order decided, the 1970 Rocky Mountain 150 commenced on 28th June.<ref name="results"/> Unser maintained his lead on the opening lap, holding it for the first 16.<ref name="results"/> However, Andretti successfully achieved an overtake at the start of lap 17, and from there, remained in the lead for the remaining 41 laps.<ref name="nyt">[https://www.nytimes.com/1970/06/29/archives/oneonta-awards.html ''The New York Times'' reporting on Andretti winning the race.] Retrieved 15th May '22</ref><ref name="results"/> His main challenge appeared not to have been the other drivers, but the extreme heat, which he ultimately overcame.<ref name="nyt"/> He therefore claimed victory and $11,162 in prize money.<ref name="results"/><ref name="nyt"/> Swede Savage finished second in an Eagle Ford, while Coyote-Ford's A.J.
