| With the starting order decided, the 1976 Indianapolis 500 commenced on 30th May.<ref name="results"/> Rutherford maintained his lead on the opening lap, until Foyt passed him on lap four.<ref name="nyt"/><ref name="results"/> Foyt led the next ten laps, making a pitstop during a caution.<ref name="nyt"/><ref name="results"/> However, as he left his pit, he clipped a jack handle that latched onto his vehicle.<ref name="nyt"/><ref name="results"/> He was almost disqualified for this, but was able to continue after being black-flagged into the pits.<ref name="nyt"/> This resulted in an extension to the caution period, with Eagle-Offenhauser's Pancho Carter in the lead.<ref name="results"/><ref name="nyt"/> Following the restart, Wally Dallenbach took over as race leader on lap 17, before Johncock moved into the first position on lap 20.<ref name="nyt"/><ref name="results"/>
