Some of the earliest films depicting actual death, Thomas Edison had this morbid belief that blood sports and other animal exploitation works would draw big viewing figures. And he was right, remember that 1890s America was a lot different compared to modern American culture, especially concerning animal treatment. Another reason why many despise Edison, I suppose.
