ABS-CBN "Panatang Makabayan" (partially found PSA for the Philippine Independence centennial celebration; 1998)

Status: Partially Found

In 1998, ABS-CBN aired a public service announcement ahead of the 1998 Independence Day Celebrations on June 12, 1998; featuring the recitation of "Panatang Makabayan", aired in 3 different variants, the kids version, the employees version, and the combined version.

It is one of the promotional initiatives of the network during the anticipation of then-upcoming Centenary of the Philippine Independence, alongside the advertisers-supported "100 Kaganapan na Humubog sa 1898" interstitial series.

Variants

Each variant features the recitation of "Panatang Makabayan" starting on the line "Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas", surrounded by the Philippine flag background, and it all ends with voiceover and graphic saying "Maging isang tunay ng Pilipino. Sa isip. Sa salita. at Sa Gawa.", along with the horizontal ABS-CBN logo appears on the red side. It is also followed by the network ID animation through a flip page effect accompanied by the voiceover saying "Ito po ay isang pa rin muting handog ng ABS-CBN sa pagdiriwang ng Ika-100 taon ng kaunahang republika sa buong Asya, at sa papataguyod sa kinabukasan ng kabataan Pilipino." which ends the PSA.

Kids

This version begins with a little girl saying "Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas", followed by the boy joining the girl saying the line "Ito ang akin lupang sinilangan", then a group of 2 boys and 3 girls joined in while saying "Ito ang tahanan ng akin lahi", and the rest of little boys and girls in casual wear joined in during the "Ako'y kanyang kinukopkop at tinutulugan..." part, which continues all until the last line "Sa isip. Sa salita. at Sa Gawa." The giant Philippine flag at the Paragon Building in Mandaluyong City is then shown.

Parts of this variant especially the "Sa isip. Sa salita. at Sa Gawa." part was later used for the 1998 Presidential Elections PSA which is aired in May 1998.

Employees

This version features the network chairman Gabby Lopez, president Freddie Garcia, a group of the network's board of directors, and the entire employees including its on-air talent appearing and zooming out from the screen joined in reciting the entire pledge.

Combined

This version begins with a little girl saying "Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas", followed by the boy joining the girl saying the line "Ito ang akin lupang sinilangan", then a group of 2 boys and 3 girls joined in while saying "Ito ang tahanan ng akin lahi", and the rest of lttle boys and girls joined in during the "Ako'y kanyang kinukopkop at tinutulugan..." part, which continues all until the "Bilang ganti, diringgin ko ang payo ng atin mga magulang" line which then transitions to the employees part during the "Susundin ko ang mga tutunin ng aking paraan" line, which then continues all until the last line "Sa isip. Sa salita. at Sa Gawa."

Availability

The video was aired on ABS-CBN during the preparation months of the centennial year from January to June 1998. The snippet of the Kids version was first seen in the ABS-CBN Millennium logo reveal was uploaded by Jojo Bailon in April 2020. The Combined version was found by 𝙅𝘼𝘾𝙊𝘽𝙎𝙃𝙇𝙏𝙍 from a source on October 22, 2024. UndustFixation meanwhile, uploaded the Employees version on October 27, 2024 Currently, only the "Kids" variant had not yet to resurface online.

Trivia

• The scene from the "Employees" and "Combined" variants with the network talents, all dressed traditionally was later used as a still photo in the front cover for ABS-CBN's 1997 Printed and Online Annual Report.
