Only When I Lose Myself (lost original cut of Depeche Mode music video; 1998)

Only When I Lose Myself is a non-album single released by Depeche Mode in 1998 to coincide with their second singles collection The Singles 86>98.

The accompanying music video was directed and edited by Brian Griffin (who also photographed the band and their album covers until Black Celebration). The video depicts the spirits of characters at the scenes of car accidents in which they lost their lives, interspersed with footage of the band.

According to Brian Griffin, his original cut of the video was "A bit too dark, even darker than it is now." He goes on to say "I can't tell you what was cut out in terms of pieces of action, I can't remember, it [probably just] substantiated the darkness". After Daniel Miller (of Mute Records) came to view the rough cut and was "absolutely horrified, he couldn't believe what it was like", the video would be re-edited without Brian's input. Brian himself does not have a copy of this early cut and it is unknown if it exists in the band's archives.
