Status: Lost
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a 2010 racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Java, and PCs. The final game has every character using a car, a bike, or in some sort of flying vehicle but in an earlier build of the game vehicles were even less standardized.
Background
During the lead-up to the game's release the game's executive producer, Steve Lycett posted a series of developer diaries on the official Sonic City Blognik. In the first edition of this diary Lycett revealed that the game's earliest prototypes featured Sonic the Hedgehog on-foot ala Sonic R, Miles "Tails" Prower in Sonic's biplane the Tornado, Dr. Eggman in a crab-like tank, Amy Rose in her "Amymobile", and Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe on a Chicken Leg. According to Lycett the prototypes in this stage of development were just not fun to play. The main problem was the sheer difference in size between characters with Eggman and Gilius making Sonic feel tiny in comparison. Another size problem arose with Tails whose hitbox was super wide due to the Tornado's wingspan. On top of this, the team was unable to think of a way for the characters to drift in a similar manner. These issues led them to put every character in some sort of car or bike with the exclusion of Tails whose vehicle was simply nerfed.[1]
Gilius was also cut sometime in between these builds and the final game though he would later go on to appear in the game's sequel Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed.
Availability
