Made By Maddie is a Nick Jr. preschool show, that was supposed to be released in 2020, but it was indefinitely pulled due to controversy.
History
The show was originally announced at Nickelodeon Upfront 2018, under a name Fashion Ally.[1] The show was created by Paula Rosenthal and produced by Slivergate Media, which has stated they have been working on the series since 2015.[2]
According to the upfront, the show was described as this:
"This animated series follows a little girl, Ally, in the high fashion world as she makes everything around her a bit brighter, bolder and more brilliant, one design fix at a time. Fashion Ally is created by Paula Rosenthal and produced by Slivergate Media (Sunny Day, Peter Rabbit)."
Later in 2019, the show changed the name to Made by Maddie.
Finally, the show was supposed to premiere on September 13, 2020, at 11AM on the network's sister channel – Nick Jr., before the controversy emerged.
Controversy
Just before the series was about to premiere, there were accusations that the series plagiarized its character designs from the Oscar-winning short film "Hair Love"."[3] A tweet by user Gabrielle Williams (@gabbyjaye),[4] compared the characters' design and sent to Matthew A. Cherry, the creator of the short, thinking that the short would've got a fully-fledged animated series. Cherry confirmed an animated series based on "Hair Love" was in development but he denied that "Made by Maddie" was it. Because of this, Nickelodeon has postponed the series indefinitely, without even premiering a single episode.
Synopsis
The show was described like this:
"Made by Maddie centers on Maddie (Alyssa Cheatham), a quick-thinking little girl with a big personality and a huge heart, who has a passion for fashion. Maddie finds design inspiration around every corner and her big ideas couldn’t become a reality without the love and support of her aspirational and talented fashion designer mom Dee (Patina Miller), and her super cool and upbeat musician dad, Rashad (James Monroe Iglehart), along with the assistance of friends and neighbors, including kind, animal-loving best friend, Jada (Sophia Torres), and the twins–rule-following Harper (Amanda Dressel) and fearless Hudson (Ames McNamara)–who are always up for adventure. Maddie’s creative thinking and dazzling designs are a reflection of the bustling, colorful city of New York and its residents. Maddie confidently embraces her own unique style, celebrates individuality, treats everyone with kindness, and encourages others to take risks and be themselves."
