Status: Partially Lost
Family Fortunes is a British version of the American game show Family Feud that was created by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. It premiered on iTV on January 6, 1980, and was first hosted by British television icon Bob Monkhouse and hosting duties would be passed over to Max Bygraves, Les Dennis and Andy Collins until the show's cancelation in December 2002 after 22 years. A celebrity version of the show would premiere in 2006 with Vernon Kay as host and would last until 2015 and a new version of the show premiered in September 2020 with celebrity chief Gino D'Acampo as host[1] and still airs new episodes to this day[2]. The show would become well-known throughout the world for the dumb answers given by the family members on the show (just like the American version). Despite the show's popularity, a lot of the show's run has become unavailable in the years since their original airdates and some are surprisingly hard to find.
Format
The format of the show would be just like Family Feud with a few extra elements to the gameplay. The first four rounds have the same gameplay (the first three are called "Single Money" and the final one called "Double Money") and in each of the rounds, two families compete to guess the answers to a survey question that was asked by the host that was previously asked to 100 people. The points to each of the number of answers are determined by how many of the 100 people said it, a correct answer banks the number of people who said that answer as pounds, an incorrect answer gives the family in control a strike, three strikes gives the opposite family control of the question. The round ends if the family in control gets all the answers or if the other family gives an answer that hasn't been revealed and awards the respective family the amount of pounds determined by what answers have been revealed. The first family to reach £300 will go onto the final round "Big Money".
Two members of the winning family are chosen to play the round and one of them is sent off to a sound-proof booth and the other player is given 15 seconds to give an answer to five questions (the questions also previously asked to 100 people). The number of people who said the answer that the present family member also said, determine the amount of points the answer is worth. After the answers given by the present family member is revealed, the answers are covered up and the family member in the sound-proof booth returns to the stage and has 20 seconds to give their own answers to the same questions previously given to the other family member. An answer that was said by the previous family member will not be accepted and a new answer will be given. If both members get over 200 points, the family wins the top cash prize. Later in the series, if both members get all five top answers, they also win a star prize (which was either a car or a trip). If the family doesn't get over 200 points, they get £2 per point[3].

Availability
Because the show aired during the time when reusing tapes was a common practice, most of the show's early run with Bob Monkhouse is missing. During his run as host, Monkhouse would record episodes of the show and 90% of his run has survived through these home recordings[6]. However, these recordings have not been made public and said recordings remained in his possession even after his death from prostate cancer in 2003. In 2009, Monkhouse's family donated the recordings to the nonprofit organization "Kaleidoscope" that recovers lost or wiped television programs[7].
The show has become a fixture on the British game show channel Challenge since the channel's rebranding in 1997, making a large number of the show's episodes easy to find. However sometime around 2012, reruns of Family Fortunes had 2-3 minutes trimmed out for unknown reasons (leaving out a lot of the show's intro and completely eliminating the family introductions), those would be fixed around 2016. But because of these edits, some of the episode's content remains lost and the only way the original versions could be recovered is through a recording of the original airing or a post-2016 rerun of the respective episode.
Les Dennis' final season as host[8] has only 10 episodes being aired before being pulled for unknown reasons and the other 14 episodes that were recorded never saw the light of day until 2012, however, these airings are missing their family introductions and only 8 of the unaired episodes are online with very little information known about the other unaired episodes. Andy Collins' run on the show has been largely forgotten about in the twenty years since its last broadcast and have never been reran on Challenge and because of that and the genuine unpopularity of his run makes it incredibly hard to find with under 10% of his run being available.
