According to the available images of the pilot, the series was going to have a darker tone. The only existing material is some short fragments and images shown by Dana Terrace in a live stream. Some storyboards and animations that were made around the time of the pilot have also surfaced over time, however, it's very likely that they weren't meant for the pilot pitch that was sent to Disney themselves. On July 20, 2021, a test animation done by Sugarcube Animation without audio very likely containing some scenes from the pilot, leaked.

Various scenes featuring Luz, Eda, and King are shown off. The Eda scene appears to match up 1:1 with one of the pilot stills, so that likely could be a scene from the pilot. There is also a scene featuring a character named "William" who at this point is a very early version of Hunter.

The Owl House is an American animated fantasy television series created by Dana Terrace that premiered on Disney Channel on January 10, 2020. The series ran for 3 seasons and is set to conclude sometime in 2023 after the final in a set of 3 specials. The series is well known for its LGBTQ+ representation with several main characters either being LGBTQ+ themselves or having LGBTQ+ parents.

A test animation of the series was produced during sometime in 2017.. Not to be confused with the actual pilot of the series which was just storyboards, the animation was created as a “Next Time On” animation, showing off the vibe and look of series. [1] The art style and character design of the test animation are similar to the final series, with a few differences:

changes to the final series’ designs

  • Luz's hair was going to be black, and her shirt had purple stripes.
  • King had amber fur, a yellow-tipped tail, and violet eyes with red sclerae.
  • Amity was going to have a different hairstyle in the pilot, and the prototype design would go on to inspire the pink-striped girl that appeared in "A Lying Witch and a Warden, this shirt would appear in the episode “Yesterday’s Lie” as a Easter egg.
  • Willow’s name was going to be Paulina. The reason for the name change to Willow in the final series is currently unknown.
  • The animation test features a character named "Sir William", who otherwise appears nowhere in the final series. The scene that he was featured in would be recreated in the season 2 episode, “Hunting Palismen” with the character Hunter standing in as Sir William.

According to the available images of the test animation. the series was going to have a darker tone. The only existing material is some short fragments and images shown by Dana Terrace in a live stream. Some storyboards and animations that were made around the time of the test have also surfaced over time. On July 20, 2021, a test animation done by Sugarcube Animation without audio leaked online, with a full version with more complete animation, new scenes and full audio being leaked sometime in February 2023.

Videos

At 1 minute and 11 seconds in the video, a small clip of King is shown where he has a paper bag stuck to his head. Then at the 1:15 mark a bit of footage of the still with Luz, King, and Eda beside each other.

Two test animations and a storyboard of an unknown Luz and King scene, it's unclear if these were made around the pilot's time as King's design looks finalized. A bunch of concept art of different characters and some areas are also shown here, including "William".

Storyboard of a scene from the pilot, or based on an earlier version of Season 1, Episode 1's script. King appears to be drawn smaller than normal here.
