Bear in the Big Blue House was a puppet TV series made by the Jim Henson Company for Playhouse Disney. The show debuted in 1997 and ended in 2006.
The show aired episodes regularly until 2003, when the actress for the character Luna, Lynne Thigpen, suddenly died, and the show was put on hiatus. In the meantime, Breakfast with Bear aired in its place. The show later returned in 2006 to air its final eight episodes[1]. The show would disappear from reruns by May 2010
Despite the show's popularity, a small amount of the show had not resurfaced in English.
Premise
The show focused on the adventures of Bear and his friends as they explored the town of Woodland Valley. They would encounter a problem in each episode, which would often be solved with the help of family members and friends.
The show was very similar in style to Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Each episode had a different theme, with segments flowing from one to another, and each episode usually had at least one unique song. Every episode had a segment with Shadow, a living shadow girl played by Tara Mooney, and a segment with Luna, the Moon, played by Lynne Thigpen.
Availability
From 1998 until 2005, and then in 2007 in China, 72 episodes of the show (73 if counting the LIVE! video) have been made available on VHS & DVD from Columbia Tristar Home Video, Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment, and Walt Disney Home Entertainment in America/China. ABC Video/Roadshow Entertainment distributed Bear videos on VHS & DVD from 2000 to 2005 in Australia. All of the episodes that were available on home media would later make their way on the internet, while recordings of Playhouse Disney and Polish (from MiniMini) airings of certain episodes would also find their way online.
Prior to October 2022, only one episode of the show was currently missing the complete English dub, that episode being "Grandma Flutter's 100th Birthday". While the English version was incomplete, the full Polish/Italian dubs were available in full online.
On September 15th, 2022, an announcement was made online that the complete series would be released on the Disney+ streaming service on October 19th, 2022 (the day before the franchise's 25th anniversary).[2]
On October 19th, 2022, the series was uploaded onto Disney+, rendering the complete series found.[3][4]
