Wiggly Safari is the fourteenth album by the Australian children's group The Wiggles that was released on February 4, 2002 with it's video of the same name being released five months later. The album and video are known for it being a collaboration with Australian wildlife expert/television personality Steve Irwin a.k.a. "The Crocodile Hunter" and the video being filmed at the famed Australian Zoo in Queensland, Australia. Nearly twenty years after it's release, both the album and video have been regarded as fan favorites. A tour (without Irwin) would commence in December 2002 to promote the album and video.
History
The tour started on December 3rd at the Perth Challenge Stadium and ended on December 23rd at the Sydney Entertainment Centre[1] with the group continuing to promote the Wiggly Safari album and video throughout the United States the very next year[2]. The stage would feature mostly inflatable set pieces to resemble the safari setting supplied by Inflatable Image Technologies[3][4] and the setlist would feature several songs from the Wiggly Safari album with some being sung just for the tour including Butterflies Flit, Cocky Want A Cracker, Wobbly Camel and The Wiggle Owl Medley (which debuted live a year earlier). The popular children's song Head, Shoulders, Knees And Toes (which appeared on the group's 1998 album Toot Toot!) would also debut live on the tour. The tour would also be notable for Greg departing halfway through the tour due to the death of his Mother In-Law with backup dancer (and future Yellow Wiggle) Sam Moran to fill in for the rest of the tour to a positive reception. The tour also marked the first time the cover of Rolf Harris' Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport (which appeared on the It's A Wiggly Wiggly World album and video in 2000) would be performed. The song would be performed several more times before permanently disappearing from live performances and album releases after 2014[5].
Availability
It's confirmed that at least one show from the tour was recorded as a photo of Greg (without his usually short-sleeved skivvy for touring) performing on tour has surfaced online with the exact date and venue being unknown. Outside of various photos from the tour being recorded, no pro-shot footage from the tour had surfaced. Until November 27, 2018, when the bassist from the tour Mark Slane, uploaded 66 seconds of pro-shot footage from the tour. The footage starts with the end of Captain Feathersword Fell Asleep On His Pirate Ship a.k.a. Quack Quack and Anthony introducing Slane as the new touring bassist before introducing Butterflies Flit. He also mentioned that "Greg had to go away of course.." meaning that this footage came from one of the shows Moran did. Just like the previously mentioned photo of Greg in his long-sleeved skivvy, the venue and date of this footage is unknown. It's unknown if Slane has the rest of the footage or if the clip he uploaded could be donated to him by the group. On March 4, 2022, Instagram user wigglesenthusiasts2 uploaded five muted seconds of one of Greg's performances that came from user charlieploughman, venue and date also unknown[6]. Any full performances have yet to surface.
