Status: Lost

Sym-Bionic Titan is an animated series created by Genndy Tartakovsky that ran on Cartoon Network from 2010-2011. Despite critical acclaim, high ratings and a second-season cliffhanger, Cartoon Network abruptly announced the show's cancellation later in 2011 - due, it would eventually emerge, to the network's inability to secure a toy licensing deal.[1] It has been confirmed that several additional episodes had been written, but to this day, no scripts or other additional production materials have resurfaced.

Plot

A notably more adult animated series in the same vein as Tartakovsky's earlier Samurai Jack, Sym-Bionic Titan followed the fortunes of two teenaged aliens, Princess Ilana and her protector Corporal Lance, who was assisted by his 'bio-cybernetic' robot Octus. When their home planet Galaluna is betrayed by General Modula, leading to an invasion of the evil Mutraddi, Princess and bodyguards escape to Earth and disguise themselves as a human family, attending a small-town high school in the American Midwest as cover. As a further defense against the various alien mutants and monsters sent their way, Octus is able to activate a protocol that combines their alien power armor suits into a giant mecha robot called Sym-Bionic Titan.

Cancellation

The available episodes re-ran on the network's Adult Swim block for a few months in 2012, and again in 2014. In a 2012 Reddit AMA, a fan asked Tartakovsky if there had been more episodes planned for the series, to which he replied:

"YES!! We wrote 10 more episodes that were better than the first 20. It was tragic for me to not have a chance to do that."[2]

He did not elaborate on what happened to the scripts, or how far the additional episodes had made it into preproduction.

Availability

After its last rerun in 2014, the show was written off entirely by Cartoon Network for tax purposes alongside another Adult Swim series, Beware the Batman.[3] Currently, SBT can be seen on AppleTV and purchased on iTunes and other media stores.

In 2017, after Samurai Jack's revival wrapped up production, Tartakovsky expressed interest in similarly reviving Sym-Bionic Titan to give it a proper finale, reiterating that desire in 2023. [4] However no further concrete steps seem to have been taken towards realizing it.
