The Genie Family (ハクション大魔王; Hakushon Daimaō) is an anime comedy series produced by Tatsunoko Production, originally airing on Japan's Fuji TV from October 5, 1969, to September 27, 1970 with a total of 52 episodes. It tells the story of a boy named Kan, who discovers an old bottle - in it resides two genies: Hakushon and his daughter Akubi. Whenever someone sneezes, Hakushon must grant the user's wish. Likewise, whenever someone yawns, Akubi must do the same. Often, these wishes go awry.

Sometime in the late 1990s, Cartoon Network would air an English dub of the series in parts of Southeast Asia under the title The Sneezing Magician. Information on this dub is extremely scarce, and details such as its cast and crew, its dubbing studio, and when it premiered are unknown. As of the time of writing, only a thirty second channel bumper and approximately one minute of audio have surfaced.

Information

As stated previously, many details of The Sneezing Magician are unknown, though it's believed to have aired sometime in the late 1990s. On May 11th, 1997, the dub is briefly mentioned by a Usenet member when discussing some of their opinions on Cartoon Networks current programming.[1] A promo uploaded by the YouTube user UndustFixation shows that the dub was still airing in 1998 in the Philippines. It's unknown if all 52 episodes were dubbed into English, though the one minute of audio that's currently available comes from Episode 3.[2]

In the same promo provided by UndustFixation, it's shown that Hakushon's name (Japanese onomatopoeia for sneezing) was changed to "Hashoo". It's unknown if other character names were changed, but since Akubi's name is also a play on words (meaning "to yawn"), it can be inferred that her name was changed as well.

The video originally came from the website BiliBili,[2] and features approximately one minute of audio from The Sneezing Magician. However, the English audio difficult to decipher, as audio from the Chinese Mandarin dub is overlaid on top.
