Aaahh!!! Real Monsters in The Big Scare (lost screenplay of unproduced film adaptation of Nickelodeon animated series; existence unconfirmed; 1994)
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters is an animated series made by Klasky-Csupo (creators of Rugrats) that ran from 1994-1997 on Nickelodeon. The series stars juvenile monsters Ickis, Oblina and Krumm, who live under a landfill and attend a special school to learn how to scare humans. A year after the show's run ended, a rumor surfaced that there was a TV film in the works, but that it had ended up cancelled for being "too dark" for its intended audience.[1]
The Search
Whether the proposed film was to serve as a standalone production or perhaps the series finale is unknown, as no footage or any other production material has since surfaced. The few mentions of the project in fact come almost entirely from online forum users questioning its existence, with the earliest being a user from a 2004 Toonzone forum thread who claimed he read about it on the now-defunct website Movietome.com.[2]
Another, rather confusing bit of info comes from a now-deleted section of the Aaahh!!! Real Monsters Wikipedia page, wherein a supposed animator on the project named Fredrick Zowski is quoted as saying:
"The film was cancelled because Viacom bought Paramount. The film wasn't dark, nor were we planning on making it in the first place."
As this was not sourced to any prior publication, and indeed no other trace of an animator by that name can be found online, the quote is almost certainly fake.
The only other possible confirmation of the project is a brief mention in a book released in 2010 titled Cancelled Films (Film Guide).[3] However, as one of a series that merely scrapes content from Wikipedia articles, it does not provide a solid lead.
Status
In 2016, Klasky-Csupo was contacted via their official Facebook account and confirmed that such a film never formally entered production.[4] How far it may have gotten into the planning stage is unknown as no confirmed authentic production materials have been leaked.
However, in 2023, Lost Media YouTuber LSuperSonicQ, who had been following the story for some time, received info from one of his contacts supposedly confirming the existence of the film's screenplay at least. Long-time LMW user YoshiKiller2S, a self-proclaimed script collector, told LSSQ that they had learned of four screenplays related to the Nickelodeon/20th Century Fox deal[5] being privately traded online. One of these was claimed to be the Aaahh!!! Real Monsters movie, titled Aaahh!!! Real Monsters in The Big Scare. Even more intriguingly, the scan of the first page they were shown is labelled 'For Fred' - a possible tie-in back to the mysterious Mr Zowski. However, it's most likely that "Fred" refers to American television producer Fred Seibert.
Unfortunately, neither YoshiKiller nor LSSQ seem to have gotten their hands on a copy of the script as of mid-2024, so the search is very much ongoing.
