The Thundermans was a Nickelodeon live-action show that started on October 14, 2013, until May 25, 2018. The show follows a family of superheroes who try to live normal lives in the fictional town of Hiddenville, it starred Kira Kosarin as Phoebe, Jack Griffo as Max, Addison Riecke as Nora, Diego Velazquez as Billy, Chris Tallman as Hank/Dad, Rosa Blasti as Barb/Mom, and Maya le Clark as Chloe.

Pilot's Background

In August of 2012, Nickelodeon announced The Thundermans show that was created by Jed Spingarn[1] and its pilot was shot in October of 2012[2][3]

Differences

House

The pilot was filmed in a completely different Thunderman home that isn't yellow and the dinner scene takes place in an actual room in the household whereas the final version the door for the dining room was removed and instead being part of the living room. And in an unknown room (presumably the living room), the setting in the living room have everything Halloween-related (ex. the DANGER sign, the green furry light, skull, etc) whereas the final version there was no decorations and instead just a plain Yellow wall.

Casting

While most of the cast for the show and Cherry is the same as the show, a brother named Oliver (which was later named Max) was played by Tyler Peterson instead of Jack Griffo for the final version of the show. And instead of being just a brother, the creator thought of having Max being a twin brother.

Dr. Colosso was originally named "Dr. Colossus" and Electress was originally named "Whipra"

Phoebe's Unused Superpower Abilities

In the pitch pilot, Phoebe has several superpowers that weren't used in the final version of the show. "Magnetism" was one of these powers which was changed to Telekinesis, and "Freeze Helmet" which was changed to Freeze Breath. Kira Kosarin (Phoebe's actress) explained in a reaction video on the Nickelodeon YouTube channel that was posted on April 7th, 2021 that she was resistant to do the magnetism ability at first but got used to it but as the series first started, she now sticks with the telekinesis power as she thought it was "way too practical."

On a March 5th, 2024 episode of the Zach Sang Show podcast, stars Jack Griffo and Kira Kosarin reveal more information on the pilot such as Phoebe's superpowers being more than two and Jack Griffo being on hold for another Nickelodeon pilot that explained his absence in the pilot.

Availability

Although the full visual pilot has not yet surfaced online, the 6th script draft of the unaired pilot is available to read on a UK Lee Thompson MyZen website.

The script was later uploaded on Internet Archive via a user named "jrchive123"[4]

Animator Ryan Daily on Vimeo uploaded 2 short (albeit silent) clips of the animations for Billy's super speed and the freeze helmet from the pilot.

The full unaired pilot was uploaded to YouTube by Andrew Warra on October 4, 2024.
