A consolation prize that was only shown during the original airing of an episode of Nick Arcade.

Status: Partially Found

Nick Arcade is a Nickelodeon game show that ran for two seasons in 1992. The show had two teams of two against each other for an opportunity to enter "The Video Zone" by moving a character called Mikey through a gameboard, answering trivia questions, and playing arcade games. Once a team has been found to enter "The Video Zone," they'll face off in a virtual arcade game in three stages to defeat a final boss, which varies in each episode. They each get a prize for every level they complete, with the grand prize typically being a vacation.

After the show ended, reruns aired on the main channel until September 28, 1997, and later on Nick GAS until that channel's demise at the very end of 2007. However, reruns of most of the episodes had unreasonably altered consolation prize plugs with prizes that came out way after the show's original airing. One example is a Jungle 2 Jungle VHS which came out in 1997 despite the show's end being in 1992. In fact, around every several months or a year, plugs were changed to promote newer material. Only five episodes out of 84 had their consolation prize plugs unaltered in reruns which are 107/126/128/137/201. Provisionally, only 4 of the remaining 79 episodes are found with the original plugs taken from their original airings, those being 108/131/207/213. 232, despite airing on GAS, has the original plugs on Paramount+, but there are still 75 episodes that have their original plugs lost. Depending on what is currently available, some of the missing plugs from episodes could be recreated by splicing one of the found plugs into another.

Availability

Thanks to the show altering the consolation plugs, the original ones are difficult to come across after the show concluded. On a fanmade episode guide for the show made by Ryan Rinkerman,[1] some of the original plugs are listed. However, they vary on when the episode aired.[2] However, Ryan's guide doesn't have every original plug due to the episodes not being available. Paramount+ has released the show entirely but still has most of the altered consolation plugs than what was shown in reruns following the show's conclusion. However, like with Legends of the Hidden Temple, the brand names can be seen in the credits at the end of the episodes for original unaltered prizes.

On March 15th, 2020, Episodes 213 and 230 were found in an old Nickelodeon Block recording uploaded to the Internet Archive. Later, on September 5th, 2022, the original sneak preview of 131 from January 3rd, 1992 was found by LMW user Racelympics after receiving a copy from a trade. On January 29th, 2023, the original airing of 108 from February 15th, 1992 was also found by Racelympics after receiving it in a trade. Other than that, the missing consolation plugs have yet to resurface, but it might not seem impossible given to current rates of video recordings of this era appearing online.
